A Promise to My Firstborn Whereas Caregiving for My Youngest

Whereas Mark was within the hospital together with his younger daughter with most cancers, he usually known as his oldest daughter after being away from her.

“A Promise To You” is a deeply private reflection on the emotional turmoil I felt whereas being away from my firstborn daughter, Leia (6 years previous, on the time), throughout my youthful daughter Chloe’s battle with most cancers. This poem captures the guilt, longing, and overwhelming love I felt throughout these days, torn between the wants of each.

Though I spent lengthy intervals of time within the hospital with Chloe, Leia’s presence remained fixed in my coronary heart. She has all the time been my emotional anchor, and her fiery spirit gave me energy throughout a number of the darkest moments. On this poem, I seize the tearing of my coronary heart as I’m pulled in two instructions, and the burden of the guarantees made to Leia, whereas combating to make sure her sister’s and our household’s survival.

A Promise To You

Hey there, my girlie, are you okay?

I do know there’s not a lot I might say

Your sister’s sick, she wants me right here

You’re proper, child, it’s all unfair

Your sister sleeps, she’s very in poor health

I’m sitting on the windowsill

In fact I wish to see you quickly

I’m dying on this sterile room

Go to? Positive, however now’s not the time

Oh please, don’t fear, she’s doing effective

Her physique’s weak, her mouth is sore

Chemo, stem cells, injections extra

I’ll quickly come again, I all the time do

I miss you too, I promise you

What’s that you just hear? Noise? Confusion?

Nurses got here, a blood transfusion

Your voice, little one, I really like to listen to it

Your fireplace and your combating spirit

We want it now, greater than ever

Give me energy, your weary father

Tomorrow I’ll come by your door

You’ll greet me as I’d been to warfare

Now let me go, she’s needing me

I wish to protect you from her screams

To you, daughter, a solemn vow

I do know, you too, want me proper now

She is going to beat this, I’ll see it by

Then I’ll convey us each residence to you
